1 don’t have time to read the material that Mr. Eastham suggested I read regarding Herpes because I am on call 24 hours per day to respond to a rape in the middle of the night; to rush to a crime scene where a loved one may have been murdered; to assist a dear elderly victim who may have been robbed of her last cent; to assist a gentleman who may have been battered by having hot coffee poured on his neck and face and a knife held to his throat; or a poor child who may have been beaten. 1 work with that victim from the moment I get the phone call through the complex court process.
It is crucial that the public understand how important victims and witnesses are to the criminal justice system. Their statements and testimony are the critical elements in criminal cases. We must pay attention to the security, convenience and comfort of the victims of crime.
For many decades we have struggled diligently to protect the rights of criminal defendants and persons convicted of crime. Efforts in this area should continue. Simultaneously, we should assist crime victims and witnesses. The system must be more responsive to the needs of those it should be serving. Without the cooperation of victims and witnesses of crime in idea* tifying, apprehending, and convicting perpetrators of crime, there would be aw system.
It is important that Rappahannock County and Fauquier County have a Victim Witness Program to protect the victims aa4 witnesses of crime.
