To the editor.
In re; “NO VICTIMS HERE” letter in your November 11 th issue. I just hope Mr. Robert W. Eastham of Flint Hill is correct in his assumption that Rappahannock is so crime-free that it is also victim-free. What a wonderful place it must be to live. No murders? No assaults? No rapes? No robberies? No wives and children battered and beaten? Not even housebreakings? It sounds like “heaven", in fact, it sounds like “outerspace”!
It also sounds like whatever it is the ostrich sees when his head is well below the surface of reality and deep in the sands of ignorance.
Mr. Eastham feels that Rappahannock's county supervisors should not be led astray by the “bleeding hearts" need for a mere $20,000.00 per year to establish a program for the protection and help that these non-eixstance victims need, nor for the help to the Commonwealth in getting witnesses in for trials when they are needed. He obviously has no idea of what this program is all about.
If Loudoun County (which has some crimes and victims, and admits this fact of life in these days, whether he does br not) gets by on $20,000 budget (with very little else coming in in donations) and civic minded people’s help, then ‘victim free Rappahannock should be able to really surpass all of our dreams for being able to help our victims.'Rappahannock should be able to place its few ‘battered’ wives and children, threatened people and witnesses, into safe houses and motels for indefinite periods throughout investigations and trials. Rappahannock should be able to keep victims of assaults, rapes and other physical damages in hospitals for indefinite periods of time, supplied with new clothes that were torn off and destroyed during their attacks, and perhaps fresh flowers every day during their hospitalization. Of course ‘victim free’ Rappahannock would have no need for counsellors for children who have been raped and assaulted and beaten, nor would they need anyone to counsel victims such as some of ours. on larceny, burglaries, etc., as to their rights to restitution under the law.
