nus me rising senior senator faces a potential double challenge. One is to his role as heir to Mr. Byrd’s mantle as the state’s political philosopher-inresidence; the other is to his hope of becoming Virginia's man-in-the-spotlight in the Senate.
They are challenges Sen. Warner is unlikely to suffer gladly. He is no minor league showman himself nor, it has been frequently rumored, is he entirely devoid of national political ambitions.
So what Virginians have in prospect, as the Byrd era closes, is an outwardly genteel but actually hadnosed game of oneupsmanship between their two senators.
That it could happen, or even be thought possible, is conclusive evidence that the Byrd era has. indeed, closed.
