ruary 9. That morning was devoted to questioning the prospective jurors, one by one. After opening arguments, court recessed for lunch. When the jury returned for the afternoon session, Martin unexpectedly changed his plea to guilty.
But it was a guilty plea with conditions, 'an “Alfred plea” under which the defendant stopped short of admitting his guilt but found it in his best interest to enter a plea agreement.
That plea agreement was presented to the judge for approval at the February 17 sentencing hearing.
First, Martin took the stand on his own behalf, he told the judge that upon his release, he planned to live with his wife in Sperryville. He said he had a job waiting, doing tree work with Otis Sisk, his employer since 1978, including periods over the past two years when Martin has been out of jail on bond.
