The 12 prints reflect Steichen’s early romantic style, according to Tompkins. “He was around in the first days of photography and was one of the first stars of the first American photographic gallery and magazine.”
Originally a painter, Steichen gave up that traditional art form for the new art form of photography. He photographed other artists of all mediums, including his brother-in-law, poet Carl Sandburg, the sculptor Rodan, dancers Isadora Duncan and martha Graham and Garbo, Chaplin and other stars of the Hollywood galaxy. In World Wars I and II, Steichen, as a photographer for the U.S. Army, was the unofficial chronicler of those conflicts.
Photogravure is the finest printing process available, Tompkins explained. “Only a very few people know how to do it. It gets so close to the original Steichen prints, which bring about $10,000 apiece today, that if you’re not well versed in photography, you can’t tell the difference.”
In addition to the photographs and Steichen’s portfolio, Tompkins will feature a selection of traditional American pieces from North Carolina’s Jugtown Pottery.
