For example, the standards would increase from 18 to 20 the number of credits students must earn to be eligible for graduation from high school. In addition, school systems would be required to offer a college preparatory curriculum, and students would have to earn 22 units of credit to receive a college preparatory diploma.
Further, the standards would require that all students attend a full day of classes, unless a waiver were issued by the local school superintendent. Currently some students, usually high school seniors are able to attend school for less than a full academic day.
If enacted as proposed, the state’s approximately 1,700 public schools would be accredited for a two-year period, rather than annually as is currently the practice. In addition, private schools which voluntarily seek state accreditation would be required to meet basically the same standards that apply to public institutions.
