“They still use traditional forms and glazes there. They’re nationally known for it,” said Tompkins. Jugtown’s master potter Vernon Owens, who created the special pieces, is expected to attend Sunday’s opening.
The work of both local and non-local artists with cameras will be exhibited at upcoming shows planned by Tompkins, Shorter and Lewis. “We’re interested in displaying serious photography that’s a personal expression of art rather than a collection of snapshots,” Tompkins said. “We’re not real purists about this, we’re not interested in taking things right out of modern art, which has always been the forerunner of photographic trends. But we have one hard and fast rule—it’s got to be good.”
