There were strict rules regulating their structures. They could not be laminated, not reinforced, not over eight and one-half inches taU or under eight inches tall. The structures could not weigh over 18 grams (5/7 ounce).
The “earthquake” came when judges lowered barbell weights in increasing increments on the little buildings. The fragile balsa structures were built for maximum strength to hold hundreds of times their own weight.
