Vander Jagt’s press secretary James Sparling says the tax amounts to a “tiny percentage” of the value of the apple and pear concentrates being imported from Argentina and other South American countries. Sparling says the bill was introduced because producers had “no legitimate means to lodge any protest.” If the bill is passed, farmers would have the vehicle to fight the foreign imports which are being sold far below domestic break-even prices.
According to local orchardist Sam Snead, most of the name brand products in the supermarkets that are bottled from concentrate contain Argentine apple juice.
