But here and there, living reminders of that mountain culture still survive. A few are blood descendants of those hardy mountaineers. Some, like Clint Donovan, are spiritual sons and daughters.

Donovan was born in Nelson County. Virginia, some (50 years ago. His family trekked to the Ohio River Valley when he was just a little boy and eked out a living on a farm there during the Great Depression. “That’s where I learned to catch turtles and fish. If we came home empty handed, we didn’t have any meat for dinner!"
