The figures aren’t in yet on how much money Rappahannock farmers have lost during the drought.
Sperryville weather watcher Dennis Wingfield says his measured precipitation totaled 3.21 inches during the first four weeks of August and the average daytime temperature was 86.2 degrees. That’s an inch less of rain than during the same period last year.
ASCS manager Tom Taylor says predicting a 30 percent average crop reduction this year is a conservative estimate.
Extention agent Birgitt Thornhill says she specifically expects a 30 percent reduction in the peach crop because of sizing. In other words, if it takes twice as many peaches to fill a bushel that sells for $7-9 dollars,
