Aware of the farmers’ plight, Rappahannock supervisors yesterday passed a resolution to request declaration of the county as a drought disaster area.
The supervisors were meting on a letter from Tom Taylor, Birgitt Thornhill, soil conservation agent Lou Walters and supervisors chairman Richard Latham. The four had met August 26 to assess the extent of drought damage in Rappahannock County.
Now county officials will send a letter to the governor’s office requesting an official declaration of disaster status. In this way, area farmers would become eligible for low interest loans and low cost livestock feed.
Neighboring counties previously requested disaster status. Fauquier County’s petition was one of the first three received in Richmond and Culpeper joined the list Tuesday.
Meanwhile state agriculture commissioner S. Mason Carbaugh attended a Chicago meeting last Friday to learn about a nationwide emergency relief program for farmers. The drought discussion was held by U.S. agriculture secretary John Block; Carbaugh was one of two representatives from the governor’s office. Also attending was OEES (Office of Emergency and Energy Services) secretary Kim Anderson.
