year in a row unanimously passed the state senate last spring. It was designed to protect mothers with abusive husbands who have nowhere to go. Colgan proposed that magistrates be allowed to restrict the father’s visits to the family until an assault case could be heard in court.

Before introducing S.B. 100, Colgan also received a 1982 attorney general’s opinion that existing laws allow the magistrate to keep an abuser aaway from his house after he is arrested. The magistrate can either require the accused to be detained in jail until the hearing or may restrict him while he is free on bond.
