The cause of this dry spell, which some farmers are comparing to the drought during the great depression, is a combination of factors. With just one-third the normal rainfall during July and August, intense heat, and no dew, things would be dry enough. A compounding factor is the lack of the cool westerly winds that usually keep this country’s crops healthy during the summer. This year those w inds have gone north to Canada.
Of all the state’s farmers and gardeners, only one group has any good news. The vineyards will produce a prize wine this year. Smaller grapes are more mature and have a more highly concentrated flavor.
