Many years ago, when one person sold property to another, the two of them would go out on the land that was about to be transferred. While witnesses watched. the seller would take a leaf from a tree or a clump of dirt and solemnly hand it over to the buyer. This was a symbol of the sale, literally showing the seller transferring the land to the buyer.
Then the “scrivener" (a person who could write) wrote the agreement on some kind of durable material so it couldn’t be erased or altered. The name of the seller was written down, he put his personal seal on the “document." and that was it! The sale was complete with every one happy and satisfied.
