computer wanted me to do, I might somehow come to ow n a “second house” in Woodville, Va. I concluded that Woodville was not fully understood by the Digest computer.
Having hardened by resolve against the Digest appeals, even the prospect of that second home in Woodville, I was struck by another computerized appeal. This one from the Smithsonian Institution, which opened its communication, with this disarming note, “I know you receive many personal (i.e. computer printed] invitations, but this is special."
The letter assured me that I was “one of a small group” of Woodville Residents (capitalized) invited to become National Associates of that prestigious Institution.
I have not checked with the boys who sit on the post office stoop each morning, waiting for the mail to be distributed, to see which ol them is included in the small group that has been favored and identified by the Smithsonian computer, but will dc so next Monday.
