Juries have shown an increased tendency to find self-defence in cases where battered women kill their husbands, even though it may have been a while since the last beating. An early case of this type was the 1977 Francine Hughes “burning bed” murder case in Lansing, Mi.
Hughes was acquitted after she poured gasoline around the bed where her husband was sleeping, then set fire to the house and burned him to death. Her lawyer convinced the jury that Hughes had been abused for so many years that she finally snapped and just killed her husband to finally be free.
She knew that if she didn’t get rid of him, he would eventually kill her, her lawyer maintained.
