“When trapped, the runner must be tagged and not the donkey,” state donkeyball rules. Other regulations players must follow include: leading or riding a donkey when chasing a ball, then remounting before throwing it; and pitchers and catchers having to field hits from inside their circle areas where they stand, as well as chase overthrows before returning to their circles to throw the ball.

“The object of this show is to have fun and action without injuries,” riding instructions also state. “The referee may cheat for both sides to keep the show exciting and the score close, but it is all done to entertain the spectators, so have fun.”

Rappahannock’s Ruritan Club sponsored the donkeyball “show” at Stewart Field in Amissville for the second straight year.

“I wasn’t too sure how popular it would be,” the club’s H. R. Terhune said. Last year’s donkeyball contest attracted fewer than the "couple of hundred people” Terhune estimated
