“I was a newcomer to politics, (and) I had 11 weeks to win it against a very formidable adversary,” said Warner of his race against Democrat Andrew P. Miller.
Warner received the nomination late in the campaign after the GOPs first nominee, Richard Obenshain, died in an airplane crash.
Warner acknowledged that Taylor was a “good campaigner and a hard campaigner” during his first election campaign, but that during the last two or three weeks of the race she “was ill and out of it, so you can say what you want about that issue.”
Opponents have claimed that Taylor greatly aided Warner that year, joining him on the campaign trail and bringing out large crowds. Since then Warner and Taylor have been divorced.
