And the Smiths couldn’t dose either, they discovered, in part due to Emmett’s encouragement. In the early months of their business, when the Smiths seriously thought of quitting, Emmett coaxed them to stay open - to give the business another month. The Smiths did, and business has been better ever since.
Life was better with Emmett around, those who knew him say. He took time for people, and got involved when he knew he could help. During the July 4 celebration this year, Emmett volunteered auctioneering services to The Child Care and Learning Center for the second year in a row.
“Emmett had a lot of insight and perspective of life in general,” Camille Harris, executive director of the Center, said. “He eras particularly knowledgeable in his field. That’s how I came to appreciate him - because of his love of his field.'
Emmet was a trusted, concerned citizen. Last spring, during Washington’s mayoral election, 26 residents wrote in his name, even though Emmett never raised his voice in campaign rhetoric. When recently asked if he would pursue a bid for mayor in the future, Emmett said, “No. I’m too sensitive. I couldn’t take the criticism.”
