Retirement Income Tax Credit
In Virginia, some persons age 62 or over are eligible for a special income tax credit, regardless of whether or not they work. The Code of Virginia, 58.1-330, authorizes the retirement income tax credit. Page 10 in the “1984 Virginia Income Tax Forms” booklet describes how to determine whether or not you qualify for a credit against the tax that you owe, and if you do qualify, how much that credit will be.
Many people who qualify for the tax credit do not apply for it, either because they misunderstand it, or are unaware of its availability. The average credit in 1982 was $118.

Youth Exchange Service (YES) is asking American families to open their homes to carefully screened teenage students from all over the world, who are coming for a nine month program starting August, 1985 and attending local high schools. Students have excellent medical insurance and bring their own spending money. Families provide room and board and may claim $50 tax deduction for each month they host a student. • Slaughter Welcomes Mail/Visits
Virginia’s newest Congressman, French Slaughter of the Seventh Congressional District, is seeking to advise interested constituents about where he can be contacted in Washington while the 99th Congress is in session.
“Our welcome mat at 319 Cannon Building will always be out for any visitors from the Seventh District who might want to drop by,” Slaughter said recently. • Coal Slurry Pipeline Bill Defeated
On Januapr 24, Delegate Raymond “Andy” Guest, voted no on the Coal Slurry Pipeline bill along with 61 other delegates to defeat the bill 62 to 36.
Del. Guest cited as one of the reasons for the no vote the enormous amount of letters he received opposing the legislation. Del. Guest also received many letters urging him to preserve the jobs of those working for the railroads.
