been caused by the disease according to Dr. Ley.
All of the deaths have occurred in southern and south central Virginia. North Carolina has recorded almost 20 deaths, particularly around Wilson. The disease has also been reported in the south and mid-west.
Researchers believe the toxin is produced in corn that starts off growing under very dry conditions but is harvested under moist conditions and is not allowed to dry properly before storage.
“The toxin grows well in high moisture levels,” said Dr. Ley.
Doctors at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine recommend that horse owners reduce the amount of com they feed to their horses and supplement com with other high-energy feeds such as oats or barley.
Com screenings, which are often made up of cracked com and are more likely to harbor the disease, should be particularly avoided.
Moldy com can also produce aflatoxins which are produced by a fungus called Aspergillus flavus. Com grown under stress conditions (drought and insect damage) or stored under conditions of high humidity and temperature, should be suspected of aflatoxins.
Aflatoxins are readily detectable by the use of a black light to determine the level of molds. Several grain dealers and laboratories have the capability of running this test.
The toxin that causes moldy com poisoning is not related to aflatoxin, according to Dr. Ley.
