Anderson announced that he and industrialist J. Peter Grace (who headed up a Presidential commission that offered 2,478 distinct proposals to cut out $424 billion in federal waste over three years) had formed a new organization called Citizens Against Waste to make the authentic voice of American taxpayers heard over the din of the special interest claques.

Both the Democrats and Republicans in Congress are trying to out-jaw each other on the subject of the annual budget deficit and the mushrooming national debt. But unless they get a massive protest directly from the American taxpayers they will not have the political courage to do anything really effective to stave off the nightmare which now threatens us, our children, and our grand-children.

In the past four years, under a very conservative Administration, Congress has raised the national debt ceiling, on ten occasions, to an astronomical $1.5 trillion! If we continue on this road to the nightmare, the Grace Commission projects, on the basis of simple arithmetic, that in the nearby year of2000 we will have an annual deficit of $2 trillion and a national debt of $13 trillion! Two thirds of 1983’s deficit can be traced to the interest owed on previous debt. We borroWted largely to pay the finance charges on past borrowings. On current projections, somewhere during the next four years our nation will pass the point of no return, to find that it has not only lost control of its future, but also the power to recapture control. As the national debt rises, there will be less home construction, fewer jobs and careers, and, finally, the economy will simply stop.
