Moldy corn poisoning is characterized by mental depression, loss of appetite, circling, head pressing, blindness, convulsions and eventually death. It affects only horses; neither humans nor other domestic animals are harmed by the disease.
The disease attacks the white matter, or nerve transmission area, of the horse’s brain. Degeneration of the cells occur eventually killing the animal. The brain must be autopsied to confirm death by the disease.
