Area Agencies Honor Robb
On Tuesday, January 29, the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging honored Governor Charles Robb and five members of the Virginia General Assembly for outstanding service to older Virginians.
Before presenting certificates of recognition to the honorees, Association President Sallie Stemple Morgan commented that Virginia has made significant strides in planning for the support of its older citizens, but that many older persons still lack the resources, mobility, or good health to maintain their independence.
Representatives of the 25 local Agencies on Aging in the state hope that recognition of particular examples of dedication to improving the lives of older Virginians will help foster even greater state commitment to meeting the needs of the elderly for affordable health care, in-home support services, employment opportunities and economic support.
• Slaughter Introduces Bill
Seventh District Congressman French Slaughter (R-Va.) has joined in introducing legislation to repeal new Internal Revenue Service tax reporting requirements related to the business use of automobiles.
According to Slaughter, in a recent statement: “In my initial travels around our district, I’ve already received complaints about this matter from a number of people who are certain that the new IRS rules on business use of automobiles will impose much more burdensome recordkeeping on their shoulders on a daily basis. They are worried that even the most innocent slip-up in this daily record-keeping could subject them to fraud and negligence penalties.”
Slaughter continued, “The IRS needs to recognize that there are many citizens for whom use of an automobile in the conduct of their business or employment is essential; they’ve long been accustomed to substantiating their tax deduction claims for mileage in full compliance with IRS regulations.”
