Moldy corn poisoning has killed at least 12 horses in Virginia over the last two months and is suspected in four ■ other fatalities, according to veterinarians at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Blacksburg.
The outbreak of the disease, which began in December, has prompted several commercial feed companies, both local and national, to remove the 1984 crop com from their feed mixes.
“We think it will be best for our customers if we pull com from our manufactured horse feeds,” said Jeff Hurst, feed nutritionist for Culpeper Farmers’ Cooperative Inc. which owns six feed stores in the Northern Piedmont area. “It’s (moldy com poisoning) getting close enough that I’m afraid we’ll get a bunch of complaints if we don’t.
“I don’t feel that it’s a threat in this area. We’ve had no reports of any problems from our feed whatsoever.
