David Norris of Haymarket won second place in the oratorical contest sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution. Norris, a sophomore at Wakefield School, delivered a five minute speech from memory entitled, “Cowpens and the Relevance of Military Strategy.”

Cowpens, a battle fought against the British in the American Revolution, was won, some historians feel, because the American general used the military strategy of ancient Greece and Rome. Norris went on to note that unfortunately neither the service academies nor the armed services require courses in military history and strategy any longer.
