“The need for (widening of) Rt. 211 to four lanes is top priority,” said Del. Raymond R. “Andy” Guest, Rappahannock’s representative in Virginia’s House of Delegates, during an interview Saturday. In addition to the stretch between Washington and Sperryville, Del. Guest suggested that additional widening and passing lanes be provided on the section of Rt. 211 west of Sperryville going up to Thornton Gap.
Don Askew, Resident Highway Engineer for the Culpeper District, said last week that $200,000 for preliminary engineering and right-ofway acquisition for Rt. 211 between Washington and Sperryville has been included in the Department of Highways Critical Highway Improvement Program (CHIP) for fiscal year 1986-87. That outlay will be followed by an additional $650,000 in FY 1987-88. Those appropriations do not include any money for actual construction. The $63.5 million to be spent state-wide for CHIP projects is a result of an increase in the gasoline tax effective on July 1.
