In a benefit match played on a sweltering Rappahannock Sunday, the Rappahannock Polo Club rallied from a 4-0 deficit at half-time to pull within one goal at the end of the fifth chukker. The home team, led by C. W. (Bill) Fannon, Jr., was unable to tie the game and the visitors from the Middleburg Polo Club added an insurance tally in the sixth chukker to clinch the match, 5-3.
The match was held in conjunction with a barbecue to benefit the Hospice of the Rapidan, a volunteer organization dedicated to assisting terminally ill patients and their families. About 200 people turned out for the $25 per person fundraiser.
The Middleburg Polo Club jumped out to a commanding lead early in the match. Earl Betts, a zero-goaler playing No. 1 for the visitors, scored two quick points in the first chukker. The second chukker was scoreless as Rappahannock
