On the weekend of August 9-10, the Washington Region, Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and Summit Point Raceway will present the Summer National Sports Car Races for some 22 classes of SCCA racing cars. In a series of 23-lap sprint road races, more than 200 drivers are. expected to compete for championship points leading to the season’s Valvoline Road Racing Classic at Road Atlanta in October.
The popular event at Summit Point Raceway is expected to draw the East’s best road racing drivers from as far as Ohio, New England, Florida and Southern Canada. The two-mile, 10-turn Summit Point Raceway has been especially challenging to actor/racer Paul Newman of Newman-Sharp Racing.
Newman has competed at the nearby West Virginia facility for some 12 years, garnering SCCA National Championship points there as well as setting track records. In recent years, however, glory has
