Rest periods were the direct opposite. Anything we wanted to do had to be quiet and had to be accomplished on our bunk beds.

It wasn’t just the daylight hours that were full. Ne’er an evening passed without a special program. Each began with a rousing bit of singing. Then sometimes our counselors would share their experiences in such far away places as the Philippines, Galapagos Islands and Ecuador through slide shows. We had camper and counselor talent night, movies, a bonfire complete with Civil War ghost stories and a visit from a bluegrass band—which was actually much more fun than it sounds.

On the Sunday midway through our stay at Vesuvius, we were offered a choice of five hikes; everyone had to choose one. The average hike began around 9 a.m. and ended at 6 p.m., and the longest covered about 10 miles. Afterwards, a service was held in the camp chapel.
