vehicle have also increased from one in 1983. . .to three during the first six months of 1986. It should be noted that each of these accidents involved a different contributing factor. . .the only correlation. . .was that in two of these seven accidents, the brakes failed on the truck and the vehicle ran off the roadway.”
The letter also cites statistics indicating that “there has also been an increase in total traffic using this facility from 2,503 (average per day) in 1983. . .to 2,953 in 1986.”
Commissioner Pethtel added that he agreed with Mr. Guest’s suggestion for a pamphlet and signs advising trucks of the safest routes between Warrenton and 1-66, saying that “we will implement these proposals as our schedule permits.”
He also said that he would “send a copy of your letter to Col. R. L. Suthard, Superintendent of the Department of State Police, and request that he consider increasing police surveillance. . .(and) the use of portable scales on Rt. 522, but, in all honesty, this action probably will not deter trucks operating at legal weights.”
The commissioner concluded by saying that “I regret the unfortunate circumstances prompting your letter, and I trust you will share with your constituents the concerns and desires of the Department to enhance and maintain the safety of all motorists.”
