Assessment charged
WASHINGTON — Flue-cured tobacco farmers and buyers each will have to pay an assessment of 11/2 cents per pound on the 1986 crop to help pay for government price supports, Agriculture Secretary Richard E. Lyng has announced.
Pentran bans ads
HAMPTON — The Peninsula Transportation District Commission is banning tobacco advertising on its buses.
Contracts with tobacco advertisers will be allowed to expire and Pentran will ask the advertising agency handling the bus advertisements to reject any more ads promoting those products, the commission decided Julv 24. J
Tobacco companies have traditionally been large advertisers on buses, said Pentran Executive Director James L. O’Sullivan. The commission’s vote also included alcoholic beverages, but state law already prohibits such advertising. Board policy Jso prohibits political advertisements.
Five plead guilty
ir. WASHINGTON — Five people from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia pleaded guilty Wednesday to involvement in a scheme that obtained $10 million in government-backed mortgages on homes in the district by defrauding the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
