because he said Congress must reduce spending for the next budget year in order to meet the GrammRudman deficit reduction levels. This appropriations bill provides $15.5 billion in Budget Authority for next year, which is a 5 percent increase over this year.
He voted in favor of an amendment offered by Representative Frenzel that would have held spending in this bill to last year’s level. This would have saved $792 million. “Obviously we must limit federal spending and many government activities in order to make progress on reducing the deficit,” Rep. Slaughter stated.
