Mr. McCarthy confirmed that no portion of the one acre lot lies in flood plain, although he noted that the lower portion of the property is subject to water back-up, due to run-off from the Aileen plant’s parking lot.
In the absence of the applicants, the BZA tabled a variance request from Kinsey and Deborah Wharton until next month’s meeting. The board also scheduled a site visit, prompted by a letter from a neighboring landowner opposing the Whartons’ request.
The Whartons are seeking approval to build a carport attached to their residence which is situated on a lot slightly under two acres.
Mr. Monahan noted that the Planning Commission had recommended approval of the variance on the grounds that the shape of the Whartons’ lot constituted a hardship. “We’ve used a pretty strict definition of hardship in past cases,” he said. “I feel like we’ll have to talk to these people.”
“In order for us to give them a full and fair hearing, they need to be present,” agreed chairman Lee Bird, tabling the application until August 27 and setting a site visit for 8:30 prior to the BZA’s 10 a.m. meeting on that date.
