Group pushes for roads
RICHMOND — A group of Virginia business leaders has formed an association to help push Gov. Gerald L. Baliles’ transportation initiatives.
The 12-member group, known as the Better Transportation Association, plans to mount a public relations campaign to win support for the governor’s multi-billion dollar transportation plans.
William G. Thomas Jr., an Alexandria lawyer who is serving as coordinator of the group, said the members strongly support Gov. Baliles’ plans and hope to help educate the public, the media and members of the General Assembly about the state’s transportation needs.
Papers better now
WILLIAMSBURG — Competition from radio and television has forced newspapers to serve their readers better than they did 30 years ago, the chairman of The Associated Press told Texas newspaper publishers.
Frank Batten, also chairman of Landmark Communications Inc. in Norfolk, said Saturday that editors once could afford to ignore readers’ wishes because the newspaper was the only significant source of news in town.
“Now readers are more sophisticated, better educated, less accepting and literally saturated with information,” Mr. Batten told the Texas Daily Newspaper Association.
