puppeteers prepared them directly for their current profession, according to the Roanoke Times and World-News.
Jim Tucker, 42, received degrees from the University of Richmond, the University of Virginia and the University of Texas. Among them is a master’s in library science.
Mimi Butler, 42, received degrees in library science and social work from Mississippi University for Women. She headed the children’s department of Roanoke City libraries and was coordinator of children’s services for the county system.
Helen Hunter graduated from Radford University where she majored in art education. She taught school in Roanoke for ten years and now teaches part time in Salem, Va.
The puppeteers have learned about their profession from books, other professional puppeteers and through experience.
The Valentine Museum in Richmond commissioned them to create an authentic “Punch and Judy” show of the traditional kind probably performed in Virginia in the mid to late 1800s. The puppeteers made the puppets, performed the show at the Richmond museum and trained the museum guides to do the show.
They’re proud of that accomplishment, but they’re proudest of the fact that they became professional puppeteers through their own hard work and talents.
In addition to the library’s puppet show on August 13 at 7, participants in the summer reading program will receive certificates. Refreshments will culminate the evening of fun. Be there on time so the tiger won’t eat all the refreshments!
