“If the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Water and Sewer Authority and the judges agree to meet over there (in the Gay Street Theater), then we won’t lose any of it," Supervisor Miller confirmed. adding that he’d be willing to move meetings to the theater’s stage until the courthouse could be brought into compliance.
Asked if a waiver on compliance with handicapped regulations could be obtained on the basis of the courthouse being a historic building, Commonwealth's Attorney Peter Luke replied that no such exemption is available. “The uses made of this building require that it be accessible,” he said, noting that the courthouse could qualify for an exemption only if it is turned into a museum.
Members of the Handicapped Access Committee named at Monday’s meeting are Hubert Gilkey, John McCarthy and Richard Abell. Former Supervisor Chairman Col. E. P. Luke, election official Chris Bird and a representative from the Rappahannock Library Board will also be asked to serve.
