Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Au- ^ gust 11, citizens can report highway maintenance or safety hazards to the ; Virginia Department of Highways ^ and Transportation simply by dialing 1-800-376-ROAD.
“This new toll-free highway helpline makes the department more accessible and promotes a team effort with the public to keep Virginia’s roads in the best shape possible,” said Commissioner Ray D. Pethtel.
The highway helpline allows citizens to help the department keep track of ever-changing conditions on the more than 54,000 miles of statemaintained roads in Virginia. Virginia’s highway system is the third largest in the country, behind North Carolina and Texas. *
The helpline will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. At other times the caller will hear a recording giving the times helpline is staffed and advising the caller to contact the State Police in the case of an emergency.
