The recent deaths? of star athletes have dramatized the danger of drugs. The problem of drug abuse is one of our nation’s most serious social problems, Senator Paul Trible said recently.
“We are at risk of losing an entire generation to drug and alcohol abuse. The drug abuse rate among America’s youth is the highest of any developed country in the world. Two-thirds of all children will have tried an illicit drug before they finish high school, and more than one-third will have used a drug more powerful than marijuana,” he added.
The amount spent on illicit drugs in the United States now exceeds $80 billion per year.
“In addition, the link between drug abuse and crime is a real and growing danger to the safety of all Americans,” the Senator stated.
The federal and state governments have responded by increasing the penalties and prison sentences of drug traffickers. And in Bolivia, American troops are taking action to crush the international drug trade.
“But we must do more. Education programs must be strengthened, law enforcement must be increased, and we must — as a society — seek to remove the glamour that surrounds drug use. There is no glamour in death,” Senator Trible concluded.
