United States Senator Paul Trible recently co-sponsored an amendment to provide assistance to Virginia’s drought-stricken farm community.
“Virginia farmers face the worst drought disaster in over a century. While it is too early to put a dollar value on the Virginia crop and livestock loss, it is estimated that the entire Southeastern region crop loss is more than $2 billion. We continue to see record setting temperatures and I know the losses will continue to rise.
“That is why I am supporting legislation to provide desperately needed assistance to our hardpressed farmers,” Trible said.
The legislation will allow the Secretary of Agriculture to give surplus crops held by the Commodity Credit Corporation to farmers who suffer losses during the 1986 drought.
The Secretary will provide at least 75 percent of what the farmer would have received with an average crop during a normal growing season.
