“The Secretary has announced that 54 Virginia counties are eligible for emergency help through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That help is useful.
“However, making loans available to a farmer already deep in debt only compounds a farmer’s problem.
“This amendment will make the emergency relief more equitable. The federal government is storing more than 1.5 billion bushels of com with storage costs of $600 million a year. We should provide this surplus to those farmers who are in dire need of it.
“This is a chance for the government to save on storage costs, relieve the burden of huge surpluses and help those feeling the worst disaster since the Depression.
“We help other countries through disaster, we help communities through disasters, it is our duty to help farmers through this disaster,” Trible said.
