It starts, said Betty Roberts, a volunteer with Services for Abused Families, with the “macho” kind of guy which most high school kids know. The audience, students at Piedmont Technical Education Center in Culpeper, responded with knowing snickers.
“The guy,” Ms. Roberts continued, “who thinks it’s okay to grab or twist his girlfriend’s arm until it hurts, or bend her fingers back the wrong way.” He thinks it’s funny, she said, and maybe so do his friends. There were whispers and a few sounds of muffled laughter from the group.
