I think safety is a fine thing; everyone should be safe and secure. And government regulation is absolutely necessary. We are a nation of laws, and the laws must be enforced.
But living in a free society implies some trade-offs. A free society, after all, is, by its very nature,, a more dangerous environment than a totalitarian society. For example, our system is at pains to protect the accused, lest he be innocent, or the victim of official malice. This means that, in our society, criminals are on the streets who in Russia or China would be dead, or in work camps. This makes life in America more dangerous, bpt I wouldn’t have* it any other way.
