Whatever the differences, excessive fish oil supplements also inhibit blood clotting, and bleeding can be profuse in individuals taking supplements. Furthermore, the capsules are costly.

Fish oil capsules are marketed as Proto-chol, Pro-mega and Max EPA. These capsules contain about 300-500 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids per capsule. Recommended dosage may be as high as three to six capsules per day or equivalent amounts in about six ounces of salmon. Prices of the capsules vary, but a consumer may spend as high as $365 per year or one dollar a day on fish oil capsules. The sale of capsules has been reported to reach a sensational $500 million a year.

At present, there is no conclusive evidence that taking fish oil capsules could lower heart disease risk. To be sure, one or two fish dishes per week could add variety to meals. Since fish is also high in cholesterol and fat, it may very well reduce the risk of heart diseases. Since we do not know about the effectiveness of fish oil, the best course is to wait until more evidence is in.

What kind of fish contains the most Omega 3? As a rule of thumb, the higher the fat content, the more Omega 3 in the fish. Don’t go overboard with only the fatty kinds. A variety of fish is the best choice.
