To the editor:
Many of the issues that are hot topics these days really involve two sometimes conflicting principles, and it worries me that the higher principle often gets lost in the debate. I am thinking specifically about gun control, the illegality of radar detectors for cars, state-sponsored religious teaching in the schools, and police road blocks to check for drunk drivers. The imposition of these government restrictions, and many others, are all intended for our own good and protection.
Whether or not it is wise to own a gun, speed, etc., are questions that can be argued on their own merits; however, to accept these restrictions as law, even though they may be beneficial to society, is to permit the erosion of rights that were once considered self-evident and unalienable. The argument, of course, is made that some things are more important than freedom.
