Editor’s note: Counselors, doctors, teachers, law enforcement and emergency medical services personnel are required by Virginia law to report suspected cases of child abuse. Once reported, each case will be investigated by the state’s Department of Social Services or Child Protective Services.

In situations of domestic violence, whether the incident is isolated or part of a long-time, recurring pattern, experts in abuse counseling agree that the victim must seek outside help in dealing with the problem. Once the secrecy, shame and guilt which accompany abuse are confronted the situation can be changed.

The following local agencies can offer help or referrals to victims of abuse:

• Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department: 675-3331, 675-3332; Emergency only: 9878525. Can intercede when requested to prevent further violence.

• Rappahannock Department of Social Services: 675-3313; Social Services Building, Gay St., Washington. Provides support services and Counseling referrals to victims of abuse.

• Services to Abused Families: 825-8876. Maintains a shelter in the Culpeper area for women and children forced to leave their homes.

• Child Protective Services, Commonwealth of Virginia: tollfree, (800) 552-7096. To report cases involving violent or sexual abuse, or neglect of children.

• Family Guidance Services/Community Mental Health: 6753329; Clopton House, Washington. FGS staffs a 24-hour hotline through the above number. Counselors are on call for clients in situations requiring immediate assistance. Other callers will be referred to their local FGS office. Provides counseling and referrals to victims of domestic violence, alcohol and/or drug abuse, and a program for the abuser as well.
