follow through with, a counseling program. If the abuser fails to honor the agreement, the spouse leaves again.
If the situation is so difficult that leaving the home is the only solution, certain important documents and information should be taken along. It might be difficult to get them later.
• Bank books, checking account records and checks, safety deposit box numbers and keys, credit cards. Without checks or a passbook it may be impossible to draw money for living expenses.
• Life and health insurance papers and account numbers, medical records and medicines. These may be necessary for treatment of medical problems, doctor’s office visits or hospital admissions.
• Children’s birth certificates, social security cards and vaccination records. If the family is housed in a shelter and welfare or food stamp assistance is requested, social security and birth information is required. Having to send for duplicates will cause a delay in processing the claim. If the separation involves moving to a new school district, the children will need proof of vaccination to be enrolled in school.
• Driver’s license, automobile registration and insurance information.
• Any information (certificates, licenses, resumes) which may be needed when applying for work or school.
• Any legal documents which substantiate the woman’s interest in material property; cars, pieces of property or possessions she owns solely or jointly. Again, these documents may be difficult to get later.
It may sound heartless and calculating to plan ahead for such an eventuality as leaving the home, but counselors advise that if the situation has gotten to the point where the victim is considering such a step, it will be much easier for her and her children if she leaves with the things she will need for them to live as normally as possible under the circumstances.
