To the editor:
I’m writing to ask for help from the residents of Sperryville, Woodville and the surrounding areas.
The Sperryville Rescue Squad, as well as the other squads in Rappahannock County, needs your help in saving lives in this county — as well as perhaps during your daily travels elsewhere. What I’m getting at is that there are many lives lost every day in car accidents, homes, restaurants and in the workplace because people don’t know what to do when someone else stops breathing.
Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a technique used to sustain life until further life-saving techniques can be performed by rescue personnel. It is a relatively simple technique, one which can be taught in a short course in two or three evenings. It doesn’t require a lot of strength, and many people are capable of performing it.
It’s a technique which, if you’re serious and practice regularly, you won’t forget. And it could save the life of a friend or loved one.
CPR, if started promptly, can sustain life until the rescue squad arrives. There is no feeling worse than the one we have when we arrive at someone’s house and must tell anxious family members, “We’re sorry, but there’s nothing we can do,” because CPR was not started on the patient immediately.
