“But there are a few people who mistakenly believe that they have an incredibly valuable commodity in their old junked cars,” he told the supervisors. “And no doubt they are worth some money for scrap, but the principal value to the property owners (in taking advantage of the new bounty program) is that I will not — and the Commonwealth’s Attorney will not — pursue them in Circuit Court for the violation of Rappahannock’s zoning ordinance. So those people who expect $40 or $50 for a 25-year-old VW bug ought to rethink their position.”
In the past, Mr. McCarthy has taken a carrot-and-stick approach with the program. The program offers car owners the chance to make a few dollars off the disposal of their cars, while also bringing their property into compliance with the county’s zoning ordinance. On the other hand, Mr. McCarthy added that he intends to prosecute violators of the ordinance, but will work with anyone willing to dispose of their vehicles through the county’s program.
The car removal program is administered through the zoning office. A form must be completed by the owner of an abandoned car giving the county permission for Mr. Wood to remove the junkers.
